Street vendor new splendour

Various initiatives for upliftment of street vendors in Hyderabad.

Who is a street vendor.

Street Vendor is a person who offers goods for sale to the public at large without having a permanent built-up structure from which to sell.

Street vendors may be stationary in the sense that they occupy space on the pavements or other public/private spaces or, they may be mobile in the sense that move from place to place by carrying their wares on push carts or in baskets on their heads.

Plans for modernization of street vendors.

Street vending zones

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s experiments with street vending zones in two areas, Vinay Nagar Colony in Masab Tank, and Sanath Nagar, by demarcating street vending zones, indicates that such zones might ensure not just livelihood for vendors, but some cleanliness and hygiene on the streets where they operate.

the outcome of the vending zones in these areas, the civic body officials are now identifying places in other parts of the city too to build similar street vending zones.

Providing loans

Pm street vendor scheme-Some 51,779 street vendors have got ₹10,000 loan each under the Prime Minister’s Street Vendors Scheme within the GHMC till date with a total amount of ₹56 crore distributed. About 81,415 vendors had applied under the scheme and ₹64.80 crore has been sanctioned in total for the project, said an official release on Tuesday.

Close to 70,159 vendors had applied in the first phase and 47,189 were chosen from among them for the loan with total of ₹46.88 crore disbursed. Those repaying the loan in 12 instalments will be eligible for ₹20,000 loan under the second phase of the scheme as the Central government will be bearing the 7% interest component.

Tying up with delivery apps

As part of atma nirbhar Bharat Street vendors can register with PAN and FSSAI, they will be trained on hygiene, technology pricing and packaging as a part of project. They will be sensitised to get on broad with e-commerce platforms like Zomato , swiggy and uber eats to widen their markets.

Issuing id cards

the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) started issuing street vending ID cards to vegetables vendors, street vendors in the city are yet to receive their ID cards. Street vendors are finding it difficult to run their business smoothly as they do not have their vending ID cards.

Urbanization

The plan is to address issues related to traffic congestion, pavement encroachment and sanitation by building infra for street vendors, simultaneously benefiting the street vendors and hawkers as well.

Way forward.

Despite multiple schemes running for the street vendors, there are various gaps in implementation, identification, awareness and accessibility of various schemes which should be plugged in a timely manner.

Benefits like maternity allowances, accident relief, natural death compensation, education support for children for higher studies, pension during any crisis should be provided to them.

States should be asked to ensure that street vendors are not harassed by the authorities, as all they are asking is a right to livelihood.
